[In-Person] Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists and Explorers
Limited Capacity seats available

If we’re going to live sustainably on our planet, it’s important that students learn what it means to be a global citizen. We need to inspire the next generation of scientists and explorers and there are no better role models than those who are on the frontlines of researching, documenting, protecting, and exploring our planet.
Every scientist and explorer can remember when it happened, when their passion for their choose pursuit was ignited. It may have been meeting someone, seeing a documentary, reading a book, or being inspired by a dynamic educator. You can spark these ‘aha’ moments for your students by bringing the world into your classrooms through virtual connections with leading scientists and explorers around the world, and it’s easier than you think!
As educators, we strive to bring meaningful and relevant learning experiences to our students each day, to connect the dots between what we’re teaching and how it applies to the real world. Join educator and National Geographic Explorer Joe Grabowski as he shares the story of the unexpected turn his education career took when he began engaging his students through the stories and adventures of scientists and explorers around the world. Dive into the exciting resource that can have your students virtually exploring outside their classroom walls within the week and learn tips and tricks for engaging your students before and after these unique experiences.

[In-Person] Designing Flipped Instructions for Differentiated Classes
Limited Capacity seats available

Our students sometimes struggle with instructions and completing them autonomously. What if we could improve how we design instructions from the start so that we can cater to various student needs and support autonomous work? In this session, Martha proposes the design of instructions with a flipped learning approach as a means to achieve differentiated learning in remote, face-to-face, or hybrid teaching scenarios. Martha will walk us through a step-by-step design with clear actions, resources, times, and student roles, among others. Several real-life examples will be shared along with recommendations for effective application using different tools.

[In-Person] Improvisation, Learning, and the Future of Language Instruction
Limited Capacity seats available

“It can hardly be a coincidence that jazz first emerged shortly after the rise of the record business: in a previous era, improvisations could hardly have been preserved...”
–Ted Gioia, The History of Jazz

Whatever else can be said about the past few years, they have set the context for an explosion in new uses of technology for learning. The COVID pandemic thrust educators into Emergency Remote Learning, and then further provided a test bed for exploration of innovations in hybrid teaching modalities. Access to broadband and associated cloud technologies has become enshrined as a fundamental human right. And in recent months, generative AI for both image and text has taken the worlds of work and education by storm, overturning established roles for humans and machines in the creative process. With all of this change at hand, it would be tempting to try to freeze things for a while, and to come up with a simple rule book for the new toolsets. However, as we shall see, there is a far better approach available, one that - much like jazz - references improvisational practice, while being grounded in clear objectives and models. Indeed, also like jazz at its birth, this approach only becomes fully feasible in the context of new technologies. And in particular, we shall see that language instruction acquires new dimensions in this environment, both in how it is executed, as well as in its impact on the surrounding world.

[In-Person] Education for Sustainable Development in the English Language Classroom
Limited Capacity seats available

Learning and teaching English gives us the opportunity to grow in our understanding of ourselves and the world in which we live. It is becoming increasingly urgent to recognize the importance of sustainability in our lives. In 2014 UNESCO declared that education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future, and designed 17 goals need for our world. What does this mean to us as English educators? How might our teaching change so that we can better support our learners in reaching the goals set out for us by the United Nations?

In this session we will look at the Goals for Sustainable Development, discuss why they are important to us as English Educators, and explore concepts from living systems theory as ways to guide us in to work in our classrooms that lead students to develop and act as change agents and leaders for sustainable development.

[Via Zoom] Making Thinking Visible: A Path from Theory to Application
Limited Capacity seats available

Transference of knowledge is a goal that, as educators, we envision as the ultimate stop for our learners. Many questions arise in connection to this thesis, amongst them: What can we do to support our learners to apply all the knowledge they have and display their communicative ability in an efficient and effective way?
Promoting skills, not only language skills, but critical thinking ones, has been on the top of our list for some time now. When enhancing Critical thinking we might not have enough evidence to support achievement. There are now several ways of understanding the path to success. one of them relies on backwards design that suggests establishing not only clear goals but stating desired evidence in advance to assert what students achieved. Through simple, practical, and motivating routines the Making Thinking Visible strand suggests students can be supported in the process of thinking, reflecting, and
analysing while enjoying learning English in a fun and motivating way.
The aim of this session is to discuss a series of simple, practical, and usable thinking routines that can be taken to the classroom, and that will be helpful for students to continue to develop their communicative competence in English.

In this talk I’ll start by clarifying what exactly SEL is and why it’s so important for us, like all subject teachers, to integrate it into our lessons. I’ll then show how we can weave it into our classes, alongside the content of our coursebooks, providing plenty of takeaway ideas.

Gamification is when elements usually found in games (board games and computer games) are applied to non-game situations, such as the classroom. How can this be used effectively in language teaching and learning? What traps need to be avoided? In this session I’ll explore how gamification and games can help motivate learners and provide a stimulating environment for language practice. I’ll also take a look at the meaning of and difference between play, fun and games; examine how different types of players should determine any gamification you adopt; and explore how different game elements (points, challenges, achievements, leader boards, story, etc.) can be used in the classroom and for what purpose.

[Via Zoom] Language arts education: Progress and barriers to application
Limited Capacity seats available

Research done during the last few decades has produced very good news: It has been reported and confirmed that self-selected pleasure reading has very positive effects. It increases literacy development and knowledge, and gives us a better understanding of others. This has been reported in first and second language development, as well as in heritage language development.

This good news is not, however, widely known. There are several possible explanations: (1) the research evidence is buried in lengthy and often incomprehensible journal papers and technical books, and (2) professional books and journals are very expensive. The obvious solution: encourage clearly written and shorter research reports, published in open-access and less expensive journals.

Even if this information becomes better known, a problem remains: The cost of making sure young readers have access to comprehensible and highly interesting books. The obvious source: school and public libraries. Studies confirm that students in schools with better supplied libraries and with the service of a credentialed librarian do better on tests of reading comprehension.

[Via Zoom] Peer Observation Made Easy: Practical Tips and Strategies
Limited Capacity seats available

When we broach the topic of non-evaluative Peer Observation at teacher meetings and online professional development courses too often, we are met with negative responses. That teachers are so resistant to this brilliant tool for professional development suggests we have not yet created an atmosphere in which this sort of exchange is valued and encouraged, where we view it as a stimulating luxury to see how another teacher is putting the curriculum into action. Far too often, teachers have been discouraged by negative summative evaluation processes and think this will necessarily be more of the same. Some experienced teachers also believe they “know what they are doing” and as such, no longer require any sort of observation. And claro, there is always the challenge of time.

This session shares several simple-to-implement techniques to introduce peer observation into programs for sustained professional development that help create an atmosphere where every teacher, no matter their level of experience, has something to teach and something to learn. Participants will explore ways to encourage an active and stimulating community of inquiry in their own teaching contexts to support everyone’s ongoing professional development.

[Via Zoom] Bridges to Academic and Professional Writing
Limited Capacity seats available

Academic and professional writing are often neglected in integrated-skills English language curricula, where the focus tends to be on basic writing tasks (e.g. filling in forms or applications) or short responses to prompts. More extensive writing is often limited to short narratives or descriptions. English learners who are preparing for workplaces, career training, or postsecondary education need preparation in the complex writing demands they will encounter, such as making claims and writing an argument supported by evidence, writing clear procedures, making comparisons, or reporting information. What are some bridges to academic and professional writing in English and how can we provide practice with these writing demands in any curriculum? The presenter highlights three practices that have been shown to scaffold academic and professional writing: 1) starting lessons with rich oral language development, 2) using graphic organizers to plan and organize thinking, and 3) providing sentence and paragraph frames at the early stages of writing for academic and professional purposes. Workshop participants experience sample activities and they are invited to identify concrete ways to apply the practices presented in their settings.
