Gamification is when elements usually found in games (board games and computer games) are applied to non-game situations, such as the classroom. How can this be used effectively in language teaching and learning? What traps need to be avoided? In this session I’ll explore how gamification and games can help motivate learners and provide a stimulating environment for language practice. I’ll also take a look at the meaning of and difference between play, fun and games; examine how different types of players should determine any gamification you adopt; and explore how different game elements (points, challenges, achievements, leader boards, story, etc.) can be used in the classroom and for what purpose.
